Brief

In the smart multi-family building block in Vienna’s 17th district, a comprehensive supply of heating, cooling and electricity with solar energy and geothermal energy was implemented for the first time for an entire block of buildings. The pilot project is intended to show that the entire supply of a block of 18 properties in the middle of the city can be provided decentralized on site in a climate-neutral way instead of using natural gas. When future renovations are planned in the block, the use of solar energy will be gradually expanded to all apartments until it is fully developed.

Technology

Hybrid PVT collectors as well as plastic solar absorbers are used in this solar thermal installation, in order to produce electricity and heat regeneration for the 18 geothermal probes 120 meters deep.

A special feature of this installation is an energy network between the buildings in which water flows at 5°C to 25°C, which is used with heat pumps during the winter and for cooling the apartments during the summer. The heating recovery of 18 geothermal probes 120 meters under the groundis ensured by two solar thermal technologies, being 100m² of hybrid PVT collectors and 41m² of plastic solar absorbers on the roof.

Financial Structure

The project was financed and is operated by a contractor, Bau Consult energy GmbH. This contractor builds and operates the system using a modular system.

The energy planning was done by a technical bureau, Dr.Käferhaus + Partner GmbH, as the project planning for housing was implemented by zeiningerarchitekten ZT.
