Brief

How do you provide heat to a residential building with 295 apartments without gas and district heating? The fossil free city quarter Wientalterrassen in Vienna leads the way since 2023, with the apartments being supplied by renewable heat only, and has been awarded several prizes.

Technology

The energy requirements for hot water demand are covered by heat recovery of wastewater with a 136 kW heat pump. The heating is provided by 330 kW heat pumps and 304m² of unglazed solar absorbers, which regenerate 64 geothermal probes, each 142 meters under the ground and functioning as heat storage. A special feature is the 150m² of asphalt collectors, which capture summer heat from the asphalt and direct it into the geothermal probes.

Thanks to this renewable heat installation combining several clean heat technologies, heating costs for tenants are around 80 cents per m² per month and 63 tonnes of CO2 are saved every year.

Financial Structure

The project was financed and is operated by WBV-GPA – Wohnbauvereinigung für Privatangestellte.
