Brief
The Club Natació Barcelona (CNB), one of the most renowned sporting institutions in Barcelona and a pioneer of aquatic sport in Spain, hosts the largest private PVT installation in Europe on its rooftop. As part of the Club’s ambitious sustainability plan within the Club’s major remodelling project “CNB S-XXI”, this hybrid solar installation significantly reduces the Club’s building’s CO2 emissions while also cutting electricity and gas bills of the facility.
Technology
The Club’s rooftop carries a total of 1,041 hybrid solar PVT panels manufactured by Abora Solar and installed by Construcía Instalaciones. Generating a simultaneous production of electrical and thermal energy, they power various areas of the Club, such as the facility’s lighting, swimming pools and various ancillary equipment, significantly reducing dependence on fossil fuels such as gas. The surplus energy is also used for other needs of the Club, for example regulating the temperature of the other pools or showers.
Financial Structure
The CNB received a grant of €1.8 million from the EU’s Next Generation programme to modernise sports facilities in terms of energy efficiency, sustainability, and inclusion. This was crucial to initiate the Club’s energy efficiency technology project, classified as exemplary.
The payback period of this installation is 8 years. By generating its own electricity, the Club will see a significant reduction in its energy bills, freeing up resources to invest in other equipment and improvements for its members to enjoy.
